Garmin Software Bugs and Quirks

BaseCamp MapInstall bugs

The latest version 4.7.0 of Garmin BaseCamp updates Garmin MapInstall which is unable to download and install supplemental maps (like our trail maps) to your GPS. The link below describes how to downgrade BaseCamp/MapInstall to a version that works.

Model specific Quirks

Garmin’s Zumo and nuvi 2757 models have a quirk where they fail to display our combined trail and topographical map .img files. Seems to occur most frequently when large topographical maps are such as ibycus topo for Quebec. V1.65 of our snowmobile trail, maps avoid this bug by providing multiple map .img files as described in the installation instructions.

Drive and DriveSmart micro-sd bugs

Several variations of Garmin Drive and DriveSmart GPS units have firmware that will not support a pre-formatted micro-sd card less than 4gb in size. If it detects a card less than 4gb, the GPS will insist that you format the card, which destroys the contents. Most of our older micro-sd cards were less than 4gb, so if you try to use your old micro-sd card the Garmin will not let you use the card until it is formatted by the GPS.

To work around this firmware bug, you canĀ  use an alternative way of reading the micro-sd card and copying the contents to your computers hard disk. That works if you computer has a SD or micro-sd card slot that can read the old micro-sd card. You can also use your older Garmin to read the card.

Once you have the data backed up on your hard disk, allow the Drive or DriveSmart GPS to format the card.

You can then copy the map files saved on your hard disk back on to the micro-sd card mounted in the GPS. Once you restart the GPS your maps should again be available and the GPS will not ask to format it again.

If you don’t have the capability to read the map data from the old card, you can download the data from our website and copy the contents from the downloaded .ZIP file after having the GPS format the card.

Pink (magenta) Routing Line Under Trail

Several Garmin GPS Models display the magenta line that highlights the calculated route under the trail rather than on top of it. This can make it difficult to identify the route unless you are zoomed in quite far.

This problem occurs on an GPS model any that supports Map Themes. These include the Drive and DriveSmart models, Nuvi 57, Nuvi 2575, Zumo XT, and more.

We supply a customized map theme that improved the visibility of the magenta route indicator at all zoom levels by increasing the width of the line. The magenta color will be clearly visible on both sides of the trail line.

You can download this theme file by clicking on this BackwoodsTheme.zip file link.

Extract the BACKWOODS.kmtf theme file from the .ZIP file.

Copy the BACKWOODS.kmtf file to the \Themes\Map\ folder on your GPS.

Select BACKWOODS theme from your GPS menu -settings-map-theme.

Whenever you calculate a route, the magenta route indicator will still be beneath the trail, but it will be much wider and more visible at every zoom level. You will still be able to see the trail color, and read the trail name text over the magenta route indicator.
